Pompeii, Italy Premiere Lit Event Features American Writers
Pompeii, Italy - June 30, 2010 – Gore Vidal returned to Southern Italy July 23rd with “The Last Station” author Jay Parini to celebrate the premiere of “Words in Journey: Pompeii and the Grand Tour” created by Neapolitan novelist, Angelo Cannavacciuolo. A second evening, July 29th, Jim Nisbet of thriller “Windward Passage” and Ethan Canin, “Carry Me Across the Water”, followed in the recently restored archeological theater: Teatro Grande.
Recalling the Grand Tours of previous centuries, the event focused on literature and travel in the region of Campania – the bed of Italy’s rich cultural history. The featured writers discussed their thoughts on literary and cultural influences to inaugurate Words in Journey part of the Pompeii Viva summer program,
Parini, Nisbet and Canin’s reflections on the Grand Tour were published in a high-quality art book that features a photographic essay by Mimmo Jodice, an international maestro in the art of photography. POMPEII: Echoes from the Grand Tour, published by Contrasto, is available at Amazon.com.
Cannavacciuolo offered a contemporary forum to explore his native land by making the voices of the writers available to the public – something that did not happen during the traditional Grand Tours. “Writers, artists and intellectuals stayed within preferred circles while their travelling was almost unknown to the local population. My desire was to give the public an opportunity to hear of these experiences directly from the writers.”
